Background of the Study

Nigeria is one of the largest producers of cocoa, contributing significantly to global supply and the nation’s export revenue. Ondo State, as a key cocoa-producing region, plays a vital role in this sector (Adekunle & Olatunji, 2023). Despite its economic potential, the export trade faces several ethical and governance challenges, such as noncompliance with international standards, corruption, and exploitation of smallholder farmers.

Business ethics, which entails the principles and standards governing fair trade practices, and governance mechanisms are essential to addressing these issues. Effective governance promotes accountability, transparency, and sustainable practices in the export value chain (Ajayi & Daramola, 2024). This study investigates the interplay between business ethics and governance challenges in cocoa export from Ondo State, offering insights into creating a more ethical and accountable trade framework.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the significant role of cocoa exports in Nigeria’s economy, unethical practices such as price manipulation, poor governance, and inadequate enforcement of export regulations undermine the sector's growth and sustainability (Ogundele et al., 2024). These issues affect smallholder farmers’ livelihoods, reduce product quality, and tarnish Nigeria’s reputation in the global market.

While previous research has focused on economic barriers to cocoa export, limited attention has been given to the ethical and governance dimensions of these challenges. This study aims to fill this gap by examining how business ethics and governance issues affect Nigeria’s cocoa export trade in Ondo State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the ethical challenges affecting cocoa exporters in Ondo State.

  2. To examine the role of governance mechanisms in addressing ethical issues in cocoa export.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing business ethics and governance in Nigeria’s export trade.

Research Questions

  1. What are the ethical challenges affecting cocoa exporters in Ondo State?

  2. How do governance mechanisms address ethical issues in cocoa export?

  3. What strategies can enhance business ethics and governance in Nigeria’s export trade?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Ethical challenges do not significantly affect the cocoa export trade in Ondo State.

  2. Governance mechanisms do not significantly address ethical issues in cocoa export.

  3. Strategies to enhance business ethics and governance do not significantly improve the export trade.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on cocoa exporters in Ondo State, analyzing business ethics and governance challenges between 2015 and 2025. Limitations include restricted access to export data and the study’s focus on a single agricultural commodity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Business Ethics: Principles governing morally acceptable conduct in business practices.

  • Governance Challenges: Issues related to the management and regulation of organizational or sectoral operations.

  • Export Trade: The process of selling goods and services to other countries.
